She can't go home again

I received the call shortly before Thanksgiving. My mother, who lived in Chicago, had been hospitalized due to an overdose of medication. She was diagnosed with dementia and could no longer remember when to take her medicine. I was told that she could no longer live alone and must either live with me or enter an assisted living center. After her rehabilitation, she came to live with me in Charlotte. I needed to take time off from work to clean out her house and sell it. This took more time than I expected. I had to quit my job in order to get her situated.

I didn’t realize it, but my mother had dementia for several months before her collapse. The house was a complete mess. I couldn’t find anything. It took several weeks to clean it out. Eventually, I located copies of her legal documents. It took months to get her estate under control. Most of my time was spent either on the phone or mailing out address changes and powers of attorney. By the time the dust settled, I was out of work for nearly a year.

After two years my mother’s condition took a drastic turn for the worse. She was now living in a nursing home in Tampa. I had to take time off from my new job. No one at the nursing home would talk to me with out first showing a health care power of attorney. As her condition worsened, I knew she was going to die. I had to make funeral arrangements without knowing her final wishes. She was no longer in any condition to communicate them to me.

After she died, I had more work to do. Even though she had the necessary legal documents such as a living trust, living will and a medical power of attorney, there were many unanswered questions about her final wishes. This process has been extremely time-consuming and emotionally draining. Even to this day, her estate is not completely settled.

I wish that my mother had access to a product like Estate++ when her legal documents were completed. It would have saved me several weeks of work trying to locate scattered information in addition to eliminating a great deal of emotional distress at my time of loss. When she reached the end I was emotionally distraught. I nearly forgot to bring her legal documents with me. If they were stored in Estate++ I could have accessed them from the hotel lobby computer in Tampa.

Estate++ can help those you love avoid the unnecessary pain and anguish that comes from not being prepared.

It is a true gift of love!
